Humza Yousaf MSP recently spent his day working with Starter Packs in Govan to deliver furniture to some of Glasgow’s deprived families.

Yousaf spent Tuesday (7th August) with the charity, Starter Packs Glasgow delivery team, assisting those who have previously been homeless.

Starter Packs is a charitable organisation devoted to helping homeowners who are not yet able to afford basic household items themselves. They hand out packages containing everyday implements such as cutlery, furniture and bed sheets – all of which are donated by the public or local businesses.

Commenting, Yousaf said:

“Starter Packs is an example of an excellent organisation providing much-needed practical help to those in the community who need a hand up as opposed to a hand out.

“Today was a fantastic opportunity to see first-hand the range of work that Starter Packs carries out. For a small team of volunteers, the number of people they help is quite incredible. At the heart of Starter Pack’s ethos is to help the most disadvantaged across the city – never charging a penny for their services or products. It is admirable that they have been going from strength to strength for the 12 years they have been around.

“Without projects like Starter Packs many more people would be steeped deeper in poverty, the volunteers and workers who do their job selflessly – often above and beyond the call of duty – quite rightly deserve our praise and I wish them every success in the future.”

Sarah Findlay, Director of Starter Packs Glasgow commented:

“Humza Yousaf has grasped the importance of the work we do, and has shown  commitment to fighting our corner...as a community led  grassroots charity under enormous pressure as the relentless demand of the climate we live in takes its toll, we really appreciate his sustained and genuine passion for our work.”

Yousaf encourages everyone to support the Starter Packs group by visiting them in Govan, either to make a donation or to visit their shops. More details about where to find them can be found www.starterpacks.org.uk
